Spreckles to be a "working man's hotel" that allowed his crew to enjoy safe habitations after a long day toiling on his many projects in the downtown San Diego area.
Unlike the other ornate, Victorian-themed buildings occupying that same street, this hotel embodied efficiency down to every one of its clean details. It is a true testament to the modern designs of Frank and John Lloyd Wright, the two famous minds behind this lofty endeavor. You can find many of the original design elements sprinkled throughout our hotel, including a telephone switchboard in the lobby and the iconic marquee sign greeting all who enter.
The San Diego Historical Resources Board even awarded Golden West Apartments with the much-sought-after historical landmark status in 1974. As the first steel-reinforced building in the city, Golden West Apartments was a monumental step in a bold shift to utilitarian design.
